Digital imaging uses a standard x-ray, but instead of film in a plastic holder – the images are captured on a small electronic “sensor” or image receptor placed in the patient’s mouth.
The image is then directly transmitted to imaging software on a computer. With the image appearing on the computer screen instantly, there is no processing time or materials needed to view the x-ray.
Some benefits of digital x-ray “sensors”
- Time for x-rays dramatically reduced
- Technical errors can be corrected on screen without additional x-ray exposure
- Lowered radiation dose for patient
- Easier for doctor to diagnose potential problems
- Problems areas on tooth can be enhanced for patient to see and educate
- Images are stored in computer for future review or sharing with specialists or insurance
- Environmentally friendly since no chemicals or waste to be disposed
